The military leader and a £1.5m hotel bill: Libyan who occupied 50 suites demands £1m compensation over MI6 torture claims
Abdul Hakim Belhaj and entourage stayed at Radisson Blu in Tripoli over several months

A Libyan military leader who is demanding compensation over
claims that MI6 agents were complicit in his torture ran up a
£1.5million bill by occupying 50 rooms in a luxury hotel in Tripoli.
Abdul Hakim Belhaj was a prominent figure in the struggle to overthrow
Colonel Gaddafi and was rewarded with the top job in the Military
Council which runs the country. He and his entourage were living in presidential apartments owned by the Radisson Blu Hotel in Libya’s capital. According
to sources at the hotel, Belhaj commandeered dozens of rooms for his
senior officers and ran up a bill of 3million dinars (£1.5million) over
several months. ‘We had to turn them all out. They had been drinking
cocktails, ordering expensive meals and using our gym and indoor pool –
but ignoring the bill,’ said one management source.
Belhaj, 46, went into exile in the Eighties after opposing
Gaddafi’s regime, and fought against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.
He returned in 1992 and formed the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group which
tried to assassinate Gaddafi three times. Belhaj (second left), 46, went
into exile in the Eighties after opposing Gaddafi's regime, and fought
against the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan
He returned to Afghanistan to fight with the Taliban then
travelled to the Far East. Wanted by the CIA, he was arrested in
Malaysia in 2004 after a tip-off by MI6 and taken to Bangkok. Belhaj
claims a joint operation between the CIA, MI6 and Libyan security forces
had him extradited to Libya where he spent seven years under torture in
the notorious Abu Salim jail. He claims some torture was carried out
with the knowledge of British intelligence and is demanding £1million
compensation. The Intelligence Services Commissioner is investigating
the claims.
